Overview

Overview

Healthcare is shifting from volume to outcomes. Value-based care requires providers to monitor populations, flag risk early, and act proactively. Clarity supported individual patient insights well — but had no population-level workflow.

Current state

No way to analyze trends across patient cohorts or identify at-risk groups at scale

Teams relied on manual data extraction and fragmented external tools — slow, error-prone, non-scalable

Users were actively requesting this capability; industry standards were moving the same direction

Risk: Clarity falling behind both user needs and the market

The Challenge

Healthcare professionals lacked tools to analyze trends across patient cohorts, identify at-risk groups, and take action at scale.

Instead, they relied on manual data extraction, external tools, and fragmented workflows — leading to time-consuming, error-prone, and non-scalable processes. At the same time, Clarity users were actively requesting population-level workflows, driven by a broader industry shift toward value-based care models and evolving reporting standards. Without native support, Clarity risked falling behind both user needs and healthcare system expectations.

Population Health Table

Introduced a dedicated population health view within Clarity, enabling providers to analyze large patient cohorts in a single interface. Optimized the table layout to maximize patients in view, reducing the need for fragmented workflows and improving efficiency during clinical review and decision-making.

Lookback Period Filtering

Designed flexible lookback period controls that allow providers to filter population data using custom and preset time ranges. This supports trend analysis, risk identification, and alignment with evolving clinical and reporting standards.

Customization Flow

Developed a streamlined configuration flow that enables clinics to tailor population health tables to their specific workflows. Empowered users to prioritize relevant metrics and patient data without relying on external tools or engineering support.

Export Flow (NCQA/HEDIS Reporting)

Enabled export functionality for population health data to support clinic retrospectives and quality reporting. Designed with NCQA/HEDIS requirements in mind, allowing providers to efficiently extract and share standardized data for compliance and performance tracking.

Usability

Revamping legacy design

From date picker to design system

As part of introducing a new population health experience into Clarity, I was working within an older, inconsistently applied design system, which made it difficult for healthcare professionals to efficiently analyze trends over time.

PROCESS 01

Auditing Clarity’s date pickers

I conducted an audit of the system and identified 4 main selection patterns that creating inconsistencies across the product.

PROCESS 02

Input & Inspiration

Conversations with medical affairs partners revealed parts of the existing date pickers confused healthcare providers when trying to access data from specific time ranges.

“What we see with our healthcare providers is that most don’t understand the custom date range operates independent of the presets. Many think choosing a radio button will adjust the date range from a date they enter in the piece below.”

PROCESS 03

Exploration

Explored a range of interaction models, including more flexible, future-facing approaches (e.g., custom date ranges). Aligned stakeholders on a simplified lookback period pattern for V1 that improved usability while maintaining implementation feasibility.

PROCESS 04

Outcome

Delivered a clearer, more consistent time-based interaction that reduced friction in cohort analysis, while establishing a foundation for more flexible date selection in future iterations.
